America's burdened healthcare system needs resuscitation

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On June - 27 - 2006
Right now, it’s no secret that the nation’s healthcare system is floundering. It’s a mess. One reason is because of the high number of illegal immigrants receiving free healthcare. As a result, American citizens are left to pick up the tab.  The problem exists in cities across America.  Take Houston, Texas, for example…the number of illegals receiving free healthcare is significant. A Houston Chronicle article explains more:
County’s cost for illegal immigrants’ care soars
Radack: Burden of federal policy ’shouldn’t fall on the local taxpayer’

The Harris County Hospital District’s unreimbursed costs of caring for illegal immigrants approached $100 million last year, a 77 percent increase in three years.

“The costs are increasing because the population of undocumented immigrants is increasing and the cost of health care is rising,” said hospital district spokesman Bryan McLeod.

The unreimbursed costs rose from $55 million in 2002 to $97 million in 2005, the hospital district said in a report released Friday. Last year’s figure represented 13 percent of the district’s $760 million operating budget.

The district treats about 300,000 patients annually, but lacks enough funds and facilities to care for all of the county’s uninsured and underinsured residents, estimated to number between 800,000 and 1.2 million, McLeod said.

Commissioner Steve Radack, who requested the report on the district’s costs of treating undocumented immigrants, said county residents are shouldering a burden created by the federal government.

The federal government doesn’t prevent illegal immigration, but hardly reimburses local counties where the immigrants most frequently settle and use public health care facilities, he said.

“The federal government allows people to come here illegally,” Radack said. “Because of that the cost shouldn’t fall on the local taxpayer.”

The district treated more than 57,000 illegal immigrants last year, at a cost of $128 million. The federal and state governments reimbursed about $28 million, and the patients themselves paid about $3 million. Over the past 11 years, the district has paid about $607 million in unreimbursed costs for treating undocumented immigrants.

The United States simply cannot take on the huge burden of treating the ailments of American citizens and those of illegal Mexican citizens as well.

Many Americans who entered America the legal way, and those who were born here had a mind set and value system of working from nothing to achieve something…and without freebies from the government or preferential treatment.  So why should illegal immigrants who aren’t supposed to be in this country get priority over those who are already citizens? We are bending over backwards to support illegal immigrants, and we are unable to take care of ourselves, our healthcare system is crashing.

A recent report by the Institute of Medicine found that our nation’s emergency rooms are overburdened. Now, think of the number of illegal immigrants who come to America to have children so that they can become automatic citizens of America. Think of how the emergency rooms struggle to treat American citizens and expectant illegal mothers. It’s a huge load. And it’s a situation which could be changed.

To give you an idea of how much of a strain this has put on the states, let’s take a look back at 1994, in California, where in that year, the state paid for 74,987 deliveries by illegal alien mothers.  Total cost, $215.2 million dollars.  Average cost per delivery, $2,842.  Thirty-six percent of births from illegal alien mothers were funded by Medi-Cal in 1994.

Those figures pertained to the situation in 1994, imagine how big the problem is now.  Congress could simply put a stop to the “anchor baby” issue and put into law that illegals whose children are born in America are denied citizenship.

The Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus (headed by Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) goes further to explain why this is a good idea:

Shockingly, between 300,000 and 350,000 children per year are born in the United States to illegal-alien mothers, and these children are granted automatic citizenship upon birth.

After the Civil War, Congress enacted the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which read, “All persons born in the US and not subject to the jurisdiction to any foreign power, excluding Indians, are hereby declared to be citizens of the United States.” Just two years later Congress drafted the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, intending to constitutionalize the definition provided in the Civil Rights Act of 1866. Senators Trumbell and Howard, the “chief architects” of the Fourteenth amendment, intended for a person to be subject to the jurisdiction of the United States only if the person did not owe allegiance “to anyone else” (Senator Trumbell). The framers included the Jurisdictional prong of the Citizenship Clause to narrow the scope of birthright citizenship. A proper interpretation of the Citizenship Clause leads to the conclusion that political membership, and thus citizenship, can only result from free individual choices.

As previously indicated, a child born in the United States to a foreign diplomat is not a United States citizen. Since the foreign diplomat is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, the diplomat’s child, who inherits his parent’s status, is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. Because the child is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, he is not granted United States citizenship upon birth.

Likewise, Congress must declare that the child of an illegal alien inherits the status of his parent; thus, the child, like his parent should be deemed to be an illegal alien. Otherwise, immigration law creates a perverse incentive for people to sneak into our country and give birth. Illegal aliens are “individuals whose presence in the jurisdiction of the US is prohibited by law. They are manifestly individuals . . . whom society has explicitly . . . denied membership.” By automatically granting citizenship to the child of an illegal entrant, Congress rewards illegal entrants for violating American law. Congress should not incent illegal aliens to violate the law of the United States.

We can alleviate the stress on America’s hospitals and emergency rooms by simply taking care of American citizens first. This is common sense, and if Congress acts on a bill that would deter illegals from crossing our borders, that would help.  Right now, there are too many incentives for illegals to come across the border, and automatic citizenship for their children who are born in America should be challenged.

America needs to put its priorities in order. And first priority goes to the American citizen. Illegals who jump in line ahead of American citizens are robbing the system.

Whether it is in healthcare or in other areas of society… those of us, who grew up in the U.S. or came here legally, should not shoulder the burden of paying for the well being of illegal immigrants.

White Guilt: Today, Tomorrow, and Forever.

Posted by Bernard Chapin On June - 25 - 2006

By Bernard Chapin

Just recently, after declining a funding request from one of Chicago’s numerous beggars, I heard a most peculiar thing. The man yelled at me as I walked away: “I’m sorry I’m not white.” At first I assumed he was talking to someone else; then I saw that he wasn’t. His tactic must have been an attempt to shame pedestrians into giving him more change. Presumably, as the man did not look like a novice to this ancient profession, it must be a strategy that, with the exception of this occasion, works which tells us quite a bit about the psyche of Caucasian Americans.

Shelby Steele, in his new book, White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era, expounds upon the mindset of both groups while exploring our nation’s obsession with race. He outlines the interplay between white guilt and black power along with the pernicious effects this dynamic has upon both populations. The author grew up in a time when discrimination was not a shadowy thing. He witnessed it firsthand at baseball practice, and in his father’s having to deal with the customs of the southern towns they’d visit.

As Steele came of age, he was directly affected by the monsoon of changes altering America. Right before his senior year in college, Steele heard comedian Dick Gregory give a speech equating those blacks known as “good men”—or those who worked hard and were responsible—as being Uncle Toms. Their devotion and diligence was the yoke which bonded the black man to his oppressors. Therefore, to defy societal expectations was the road to individual freedom. Steele was powerfully impressed with this analysis and acquired a sense of freeform rebellion. He quit his high paying summer position, even though it was the best job he ever had, and vowed to no longer be a good man like his father. His self-sabotage amounted to a rejection of white authority. Luckily, his rebellion did not last long. Time, along with his stint as an employee of the welfare state, changed his views and allowed him to become the scholar who penned this excellent book.

Throughout the text, Steele combines remembrance with observation as a means to elucidate interracial relations. He defines white guilt as being a complete vacuum of moral authority wherein a stigma is cast upon an entire group of people regardless of what they do or say. In the 1960s, it flourished in whites due to the very real historical wrongs of segregation and slavery. By the end of that decade, due to the growing passivity of whites, the black leadership no longer echoed Dr. King. They became radicalized, and there was no shortage of white politicians, intellectuals, and glitterati (recall Leonard Bernstein) ready to sprawl before their collective feet and regain their moral goodness. For many Caucasians, irrational hate for your own race and your ancestors has now become a mechanism for self-esteem and purity.

When aggression meets submission the result is slaughter, and that’s exactly what has happened to the pride of white America over the course of the last four decades. Rage has become the preferred weapon for obtaining concessions from white politicians, and shame prevents rational minds from protesting these tactics. Steele compares the state of many whites to that of Kafka’s main character in The Trial, who is guilty of a crime solely because he has been accused. Black activists insisted that acquiring skills and education alone are not acceptable solutions; our government must actively raise them up. This demand is a reason why so many ashen faced elites embrace “diversity” and affirmative action. It allows them to acquire power while amassing feelings of personal superiority. Even corporations have gotten into the game:

Yet to gain employment today in most American institutions whites must
somehow pledge allegiance to “diversity” as if to demonstrate a white
identity of contrition and deference. Even in the corporate and military
worlds—not to mention academia—no white goes far without genuflecting
to diversity. Nevertheless, beyond an identity that apologizes for white
supremacy, absolutely no white identity is permissible.

The government internalized the stigma and dishonor of the majority population, and flooded black neighborhoods with lakes of redemptive spending. That the programs and grants issued were ineffective, or even made things worse, was largely irrelevant as the actions were designed to restore feelings of righteousness in politicians and their appointees. They became part of the solution and those of us who questioned their counter-productive, and steroidal, inflation of government were dismissed as being racist (and still are today).

To procure power, and as a way to impress upon others their own moral superiority, many whites pretend that history never happened and claim that without their noblesse oblige blacks would descend into the abyss. Steele accurately observes that their attitude is merely just a new form of white supremacy as it renders whites wholly responsible for the failures and successes of those they see as being below them. It suggests that blacks cannot possible fend for themselves.

Due to our country’s remarkable ascent from the nadirs of slavery and segregation, the devotees of white guilt have had to fabricate concepts like institutional racism and white privilege. Without them, they could not continue to proclaim that the most fair and prosperous nation on the planet is actually a Death Star of hate and injustice. Apparently, racism is so entrenched in our culture…that one cannot even see it.

In the opinion of this reviewer, what keeps racial tensions high in America are intra-race conflicts as opposed to the interracial ones. Most likely, if one group of Caucasians discontinued the practice of systematically defaming all other Caucasians then the strains among us would diminish. The alchemizing of racism from discussions concerning taxation and personal choice does little more than poison our air. When blacks are free from the conspiracy theories and psychologizing of a power obsessed white elite, we will all get along much better.

White guilt is a phenomenon that contaminates all who come into contact with it. As Steele notes, it has delegitimized the national virtues of industry, initiative, individual responsibility, the delay of gratification, and the need for meritocracy. When one embraces these quintessential values, one does not “act white” or “work for the man,” one betters oneself and the people around you.

Ultimately, the best practice for individuals is to treat others as your equals. Modifying your speech and pretending strangers are sensitive to your every syllable is just absurd. The solution to racial problems is not to kow-tow to certain groups and apologize for crimes you never personally committed; instead, we should simply treat other people with respect no matter where they lie on the diversity flowchart. Skin color has nothing to do with personality or worth. Just as one can be certain that segregation and slavery occurred, one can also be certain that the Lester Maddoxes, Orval Faubuses, and Theodore Bilbos are long dead and will never rise again. It is now an excellent time to bury white guilt along with them.

Canada, the United States, and Mexico…a possible merger?

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On June - 20 - 2006

If someone would have told me last year that some of our leaders in our government and those of the powerful elite in this country were plotting to merge Canada, the United States, and Mexico, I would have brushed it aside as a conspiracy theory.  Yes, it seems wild, however as we face the huge illegal immigration issue, many conservatives are now starting to put the pieces together.

Is the lax view in which our government is taking regarding illegal immigration connected to plans to merge America with Canada and Mexico?  Many reasons have led me to think this is a possible scenario.  We continue to deal with the illegal immigration issue, the Senate failing to listen to the American public and drastically cut down on the number of illegals entering the U.S., and deporting those who are here illegally.
The round up of illegals continue across America, and the National Guard is setting up along the U.S./Mexico border, but no bill has been signed to address our border problems.   Putting in place a long term solution to deal with illegal immigration has stalled. The thinking of some in our government towards illegal immigrants has almost shelved the H.R. 4437 bill that would crack down on illegal immigration and make those who are here felons.  Former Secretary of State Colin Powell weighed in on the illegal immigration issue in Mexico City recently and mentioned that any barriers that will be erected along the U.S./Mexico border should include gates for easy access!  What is he thinking?!   With that analogy, we might as well erase the borders and become one big community!  That, I fear, is  the plan anyway.
The power and reach of government into citizens’ lives has grown substantially under President Bush’s administration, instead of decreasing, as Republicans usually stand for smaller government.  This has me questioning a proposal by Scott Silverman, chairman of VeriChip Corp., to track legal immigrants with chip implants under the skin.  ”We have talked to many people in Washington about using it,” he said in an interview on Fox and Friends, a TV show on the Fox News Channel. Senators have mulled over the proposal, and are seriously considering the idea.
Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) to Congress:
“President Uribe said he would consider having Colombian workers have microchips implanted in their bodies before they are permitted to enter the US for seasonal work,” he said.
The RFID (Radio Frequency ID) VeriChip tag is trying to gain momentum, and in my opinion, raises serious privacy concerns.  I’ve written on the subject in an earlier article, Technology…a blessing and a curse, and I’m leery of the government tracking me, or tagging me as if I were livestock.
Right now, keeping track of immigrants through the VeriChip has only been relegated to an idea, but a scary one nonetheless.  This could be a possibility for immigrants, but imagine what could be proposed in the future for those who are citizens.
How much power are we allowing the government to have? What is their true plan?
A project in the works to connect Canada, America, and Mexico through the I-69 highway has me connecting the dots.  It is indeed a massive project that is intended to allow for the easy flow of goods and services, under the banner of  “free trade.” This will no doubt inconvenience many people, and right now, in my area of Tennessee, local governments are meeting with the public about possible changes they may experience due to the I-69 highway running through this area.
The entire I-69 project has been in planning mode for some time. Currently I-69 begins in the state of Indiana and runs through Michigan to the Canadian border.  But other states like Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas will also be affected as talks heat up about extending the highway all the way to Mexico.
I feel that the Federal Government is now urging local governments to discuss this plan with citizens whom the I-69 project will affect, so they can get the ball rolling. But at what cost do we allow this to continue?  How will I-69 truly benefit the U.S.?
Yes, many of us were in the frame of mind that the government couldn’t possibly be planning a merger with Canada and Mexico, but now I believe it’s fast becoming a reality and no longer can we ignore the signs.
It’s something to think about…are our leaders planning to subvert the Constitution of the U.S. and U.S. sovereignty in favor of erasing our borders with our neighbors to the north and south?
Not many Americans know of the possible Canada, America, Mexico merger and it’s up to you, the reader to get the information out there so that Americans can demand answers from our government.  Why was this plan kept secretly under wraps and the public not told? We the people have a say in this!
Let’s demand answers of the stealth plan, the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America… surely the blueprint to the eventual U.S. merger with Canada and Mexico.

Gay Marriage: A far cry from a Holy Union

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On June - 13 - 2006

Once again, the gay marriage issue has come before the Senate.  And with no surprise,  Senators motioned to strike down a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. What a sad state the Senate has become!  It should have been a no-brainer to stand up in the defense of marriage!

Critics of the bill surmised that the effort by the President to bring the issue again to the forefront was a political stunt aimed to revive the conservative base during this election year, and to help his sagging poll numbers.
Time for a reality check:  The issue of gay marriage is a serious one.  Many people, myself included, are seriously concerned with the way marriage is being redefined today, which is why the issue is before the Senate.  Marriage and family was meant to offer a stable environment for the continuation of mankind, to populate the earth, one man, one woman. It is not a union that is meant to fulfill one’s lustful desires.  Marriage has been corrupted by individuals who insist that their sexual preference of a same sex partner is normal when nature screams just the opposite.  These individuals contend that they are unable to change their sexual behavior, or that perhaps God just made them that way.  Nonsense…God planned for this earth to be populated with people…
“Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.” Genesis 9:1 (NIV)
That is what God told Noah’s sons and their WIVES… as in the female persuasion.  THAT is what marriage is about.  One would notice it was not only Noah and his sons who exited the Ark, there were some women on board.
So I wonder what God is thinking as gay couples flock to churches, or come before Him to ask for His blessing. No doubt He is frowning on the nonsense.
Human beings are meant to reproduce through male and female interaction. There has not been one incident where two people of the same sex have been able to conceive a child naturally…it’s scientifically impossible and was not meant to be so.  The gay lobbyists and homosexual activists would have many to believe that their lifestyle is normal, that Americans should accept it.
Marriage is a sacred institution and it’s surprising that, in the name of tolerance, many of us have turned a blind eye to the rising influence of homosexual activists and the issue of gay marriage. The gay marriage issue is not some political football to be tossed around…it must be faced head on and rebuked.  Gay marriage is a sham, it destroys the foundation of a normal society.  The marriage amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman will not die.  The fight to preserve the sanctity of holy matrimony is a must.
Forty-five states have already moved to define marriage between one man and one woman. This shows that We the People are sick of the gay marriage issue, and on the local level, have decided to act.
We’ve felt the threat from activist judges who dismiss the will of the people to keep marriage between one man and one woman and from gay activists who strive to push their sexual deviant behavior in the schools and in every facet of society.  In a recent incident in Massachusetts, a father was outraged to find his 5 year old son bringing home pro-homosexual books from kindergarten (read more under ‘related reading’)!  He expressed his concern about the books at a meeting before school officials, and because he refused to leave until school officials gave him the option of removing his child from  “certain classes,” he ended up spending time in jail.  Criminal trespassing was the reason he spent time behind bars!  All of this came about because one father disagreed with the teachings of homosexuality to his young child!  This father stood up for his child and paid a price. Would you go that far to protect your child?
The homosexual movement has infiltrated just about every organization, including now, the Environmental Protection Agency.  Part of the Federal Government, the EPA is taxpayer funded.  Yet they feel that it’s important to designate June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month!  Throughout the month, the EPA will host events that will celebrate the homosexual lifestyle. This event will be wrapped up in a tone of “civil rights”…as the theme boasts “Pride, not Prejudice.”  What does the Environmental Protection Agency have to do with promoting gay rights??!!  Surely the taxpayers should have a say in this!
If you disagree with the EPA promoting a homosexual agenda, send an email to EPA administrator Stephen Johnson johnson.stephen@epa.gov and President Bush president@whitehouse.gov, tell them you disagree with a government agency participating in promotions of the homosexual lifestyle.
Whether it’s through marriage, our children, or various companies throughout America, gay activists continually seek to bring up the ”tolerance” and discrimination issue to push their agenda on the rest of us.  I don’t condone discrimination or violence against anyone who is a homosexual, but I have a right to speak out against and not tolerate any indoctrination of the homosexual lifestyle.
I am asking all who read this article…if you have school aged children, sit them down and let them read this information.  The gay activists are starting young, going after 5 year olds!  Be involved in the upbringing of your children and confront a problem head on if you disagree with what your child is being taught in his/her school.
As we look forward to further review of the gay marriage issue, let us face it with common sense, science negates it (no means of producing offspring), certainly God Almighty frowns on it.  Gay marriage is an “unholy” gesture in the sight of God.  And with that, we may reap the consequences as a society if we allow the legalization of gay marriage.
Become active in the defense of marriage, it’s the most sacred of unions. Once tarnished by gay marriage, anything goes.

Rash comments bring hurtful consequences

Posted by Felicia Fee Benamon On June - 6 - 2006
“The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”–Proverbs 15:4 (NIV)
Irrational outbursts and commentary are prevalent these days. People lash out emotionally without thinking of the consequences of their words. No matter how passionate one feels about an issue, it is never an excuse to cross the line into the outrageous.
Outlandish remarks made by Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) around Memorial Day regarding a supposed incident of a group of US Marines killing innocents (Haditha), show the disregard that Murtha has for our fighting forces and their families.  Memorial Day is supposed to be a time when our nation looks back on the many sacrifices of those in our armed forces, and instead, Murtha screams that US Marines “killed innocent civilians in cold blood.”  While an investigation continues into whether this was true, Murtha took the opportunity to slam our troops instead of congratulating them on a job well done for their overall efforts to stabilize Iraq.
Murtha’s comments only further isolate our troops in the world’s eyes as  “baby killers”, or murderers.  The aunt of a soldier who died in the roadside bombing in Haditha before the alleged killings took place said that Murtha’s statements “come across as though they are facts at this point and it’s a little bit unfair.”
Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki reportedly called the alleged Haditha killings “a horrible crime,” and said he’s losing patience with news of killings in Iraq.  This he said after recently vowing to crush terrorism in Iraq.  Well if that’s the case, I would like to see the Iraqi government significantly step up in leadership mode, and go after the real perpetrators and relieve the pressure off of US forces (and those of our allies) so that they can finally come home.
US troops and our allies have been more than accommodating through the hardships Iraqis have had to endure.  At times, when our troops feel they are threatened, they have no choice but to respond with force.  We do not know what happened after the roadside bombing in Haditha last November, if troops intentionally killed innocent Iraqis, or if they were engaging in a firefight afterward that resulted in the deaths of Iraqis.  But let us allow all the facts to be presented before making rash comments about our troops.
Spewing venom at President Bush
The anti-war crowd and Bush-haters have been in overdrive to discredit President Bush as many of us are aware.  I have been critical of he President’s many decisions lately, but I would NEVER indicate that he should be removed from this earth.
At a graduation ceremony at Queen’s college in New York City, New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi described Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) as one who would “put a bullet between the president’s eyes if he could get away with it.”
That horrible comment was said in front of a graduating class of whom was looking to hear  seeds of wisdom from their leaders.  But the damage was done even as Hevesi apologized for the stupid remark.
For making such a reckless comment, Hevesi should have resigned or some similar penalty should have been issued.  To mention in the same sentence “bullet” and “President” is unfathomable and downright vile!
There are many who are causing harm by the words of their mouth and the regret and fallout from those words could have been prevented in the first place.  That’s why I refuse to join the forces of the anti-war left, and I will continue to stand by the troops and their job in Iraq.  I supported regime change in Iraq, but I believe that it’s time to come up with a plan to finish the job so our troops will come home.
No matter what happens, we have the best fighting force in the world, and the most compassionate.  President Bush is courageous in his fight to eliminate terror, and I will continue to support him in that area.  He is still the President and deserves respect for the office he holds.
Let’s be wise in how we present our views, we can do more damage than we realize with our tongue.
